Firefighters attending the scene at Cork's iconic Shandon Sweets following a small fire yesterday.

Beloved sweet makers closed due to fire

One of Cork’s oldest and most beloved businesses has been temporarily closed following a fire at its premises.

Shandon Sweets, which is located on Redmond Street in Shandon, suffered a small commercial fire on Monday afternoon.

Fire brigade units from Anglesea Street were called to the scene and were able to put out the fire.

A message posted on Shandon Sweets’ Facebook page read: “Hi everyone. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances today, we are going to be closed for the near future. I will update you as soon as we are back up and running. Sorry for any inconvenience caused! Tony.”

Run by father and son Tony and Dan Linehan, the business has been manufacturing sweets since 1928 and is Cork’s only remaining sweet manufacturer.

All the sweets are made on the premises using sugar, sucrose, syrup and water, a method unchanged since 1928. They produce classic sweets like pear drops, clove rock, pineapples, apple drops and bulls eyes.
