Courthouse changes afoot

The former courthouse in Youghal could be set for a new lease of life, it was revealed this week. News came to light on Monday that it could be turned into a maritime museum for the East Cork coastal town.

A spokesperson for Cork County Council confirmed to the newspaper: “The Courts Service have recently agreed to transfer the former court building in Youghal to Cork County Council. The formal procedure for the transfer is currently underway.” Taking to social media, Independent Cllr Mary Linehan-Foley described it as “great news”. Her post added: “Cork County Council announced that they will be taking over Youghal Court House, following my motion in July 2017. “It will be looked at for a maritime museum or archive centre and visitor centre. Since Youghal is steeped in history we need to showcase it.”

I’m all excited as I grew up looking at this beautiful iconic building all my life, and it was an idea I had so that history wouldn’t be lost.”
