Student accommodation hatched at Leeside launch

The latest student accommodation to launch on Leeside has a “Willy Wonka type mood” according to its owners.

The developers said that the 265 bedroom complex is located on Copley Street in the city centre and came about as a result of a venture between Hatch Student Living and Elkstone.

Located in Copley Court comprising Marsh’s Yard and Cork Steelworks on Copley Street, it was, the owners say, driven by increased demand for high quality student accommodation.

The refurbishment was designed by award winning consultants Kingston Lafferty Design.

A statement about the building said: “There is also a gym, laundry and garden zone which connects the outside in and finishing materials create infinity spaces. The use of playful shapes in acrylic and perspex, with stripes enveloping walls, floors and ceilings along with giant lollipop lights make for a magical Willy Wonka type mood.”

The new rooms are larger than average new-build student rooms with higher ceiling heights, and more natural light.

Elkstone and HATCH Student Living acquired Copley Court, then a 137 bed purpose-built student accommodation building, along with an adjoining office block, which was occupied by the UCC School of Architecture and an 80 space basement car park, in February 2018. 128 new purpose-built student beds have been added in this 16 month refurbishment project, bringing the total bed spaces in the complex to 265 and all are en-suite rooms.

Reddy Architects, KSN Project Management and Quantity Surveyors, Malachy Walsh & Partners Engineering Consultants, and Michael Slattery & Associates Fire Consultants were all part of the development team. The complex has been completed by the main contractor John Paul Construction to a high standard, with innovative design and quality finishes.

To date, Elkstone has been involved with the development of over 2,000 student beds and HATCH is committed to filling the gap in student accommodation outside Dublin in Cork, Galway and Limerick as well as regional IT centres around the country and the business has plans to grow each location, creating brand recognition on a global scale.
