Works have begun on the construction of the Eastern Strategic Link trunk water main.

Works begins along city quays

Water works will continue along quays in Cork city until the end of September after beginning earlier this week.

Irish Water (IW), working in partnership with Cork City Council, began working on the Eastern Strategic Link trunk water main on Monday, which IW say will provide a more secure, reliable water supply for Cork city.

The newest section of trunk main is 470 metres and will be constructed along Patrick’s Quay and Camden Quay.

Once complete, the Eastern Strategic Link trunk water main will provide the capacity to re-route supply from other areas in the event of a large burst or other unplanned incident.

The first phase of this project has been completed with the successful installation of 2km of new pipeline along the Lower Glanmire Road and Horgan’s Quay. Works are also progressing on Port of Cork lands at Tivoli with the installation of a further 2km of new pipeline, which will connect to the water treatment plant at Glashaboy.

Ward & Burke Ltd are carrying out the work and site investigation works have been taking place over the past six weeks in advance of the pipeline construction.

Pipeline construction starts at 9.30am each day to minimise disruption to traffic flow in the city centre and will continue until the end of September.

A closure of the Patrick’s Bridge junction will be required in order to complete the construction of this pipeline safely, but this will be for a short period of time and additional communications will issue to the public well in advance of any road closures.

Irish Water’s project manager Steven Blennerhassett said: “I would like to thank businesses and residents for their patience and support as we carry out this essential work. We recognise that it can cause inconvenience and we will continue to make every effort to minimise disruption through active, open engagement with local communities and through collaboration between our project team and our contracting partners, Cork City Council and An Garda Síochána.”
