Pansy Plentiful Top tip: Sedum Birthday Party

Autumnal colours to love

By Margaret Griffin

Burnt oranges, autumnal yellows, deep purples and rich pinks are all coming into blossom and will revitalise your hanging baskets, containers or garden beds.

By adding autumn colour now to all your borders and containers, your patio will be vibrant right up till the end of autumn at least. Griffins' trailing pansies and viola love our autumn weather in Cork! These plants will flower right through now till the end of spring 2020.

Our nursery has been growing this trailing pansy for a few years now and the results have excelled all expectations. Homes and gardens around Cork can now have their wonderful hanging basket displays all year round. The trailing pansy has transformed basket, tubs and containers. Available in a range of colours, the trailing pansy is one of our top sellers every autumn. Trailing pansies are excellent seasonal colour for ground cover. Plant these and violas in your garden border or containers as well as baskets and you will be amazed at the vibrant colour all through our dark months.

Remember that pansies love free draining compost and a bright sunny position. They can tolerate cool temperatures. Feed with slow release tablets for best results.

If planting in a basket, ensure you use good quality compost like Multi Purpose John Innes. In a wire basket, I always plant trailing pansies through the side and bottom. This takes time and patience but results are amazing. Feed well when planting and it will reward you with at least six months of colour.

You don't want a birthday party to flop, nor do you want your sedums to! This outstanding sedum from our nursery will dazzle you in late summer or early autumn with its huge, deep rose pink flower heads atop solid, compact foliage that doesn't fall apart. The succulent leaves are deliciously tinted purple-maroon which provides colour before the blooms light up the garden.

This sedum is ideal for rockeries and pots. It loves full sun and excellent drainage. Birthday Party is low maintenance and will dazzle you in late summer even in poor soil, but should be well drained.

Divide every three to five years to maintain plant vigour. Plant in multiplies of three or more in a border and you will have a striking and colourful landscape! The huge bright pink flowers attract butterflies to your garden too.
