Vania Monteiro runs Shabby Chic World, an upcycling service.

A chic way to save the planet

Firmly rooted in the world of ‘reuse and recycle’, Shabby Chic World aims to breathe new life into used furniture.

Originally founded by Claire Falzon and Alexander Bonello in Malta back in 2015, Shabby Chic World recently set up in Cork thanks to Vania Monteiro, giving people the option of retaining their old furniture, kitchens, bedrooms and doors, rather than discarding them, in order to help safeguard the environment.

Offering clients a vast range of furniture painting services, finished to any style and effect, the business has rapidly gained support, and is directly responsible for the upcycling and painting of hundreds of kitchens, bedrooms, doors and all types of furniture.

Shabby Chic World goes on site to customers’ homes and businesses, leaving furniture in place to complete jobs in minimal time, usually one or two days.

The company’s paints are odourless and child- and pet-friendly, and very low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

“Many people have beautiful solid wood pieces of furniture, which often also have sentimental value, but which might have been put aside for many years, as they don’t quite fit into their current décor,” says Vania.

“It has become very popular for these people to ask us to renovate these pieces and to give them a new lease of life, by transforming them into beautiful custom-made objects, which blend into their home environments after a thorough uplift. This has become all the more popular due to people’s consciousness on the environment and their reluctance to discard beautiful old objects.”
