Atlantia calling for diabetics

As its stands, 30 million people around the world have been diagnosed with diabetes. Although diabetes is a multifactorial disease, it is widely believed that the increase in diabetes worldwide may be linked to the adoption of the western diet.

Recently, research has shown that the use of the western diet has an impact on the gut microbiome, altering both the composition and activities of that microbiome. The microbiome refers to the bacteria, viruses, fungi, phage and other micro-organisms that reside in your intestine.

The present study with Atlantia will investigate the use of a probiotic on the gut microbiome and its potential beneficial effects in the management of Type II Diabetes. In addition to its influence on diabetes, boosting the quantity of SCFAs may have a secondary benefit by protecting the gut barrier, preventing undesirable bacteria from entering the bloodstream.

A device known as a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) will be used to measure the potential effect of the probiotic on glucose levels over the course of the study. The CGM is a small, button-sized device with a microneedle, which is placed on the upper arm. Once inserted, it continuously monitors glucose levels and the readings obtained are transferred to a remote device or smartphone for analysis.

Atlantia is seeking people with a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes, treated with exercise and diet alone or, in combination with Metformin. Successful applicants of the study will take the probiotic supplement twice daily, over a 12 week period.

As with all studies run by Atlantia, all participants are offered a free health check at each visit which includes a full blood test, blood pressure and BMI check. Each participant will receive €575 upon completion of the study.
