Cycle survey sets wheels in motion

A survey that will shed some much needed light on the opinions and views of Cork cyclists was launched this morning.

The Big Cork Cycling Survey was created by the Cork Cycling Campaign in a bid to give its 385 plus registered members and thousands of social media followers a voice in issues surrounding cycling in Cork.

“We hope to get 1,000 responses to this survey. The replies will give a great snapshot into the views, opinions and behaviours of people who cycle in the Cork metropolitan area,” said Conn O’Donovan of the Cork Cycling Campaign.

“The campaign will analyse the results carefully and will share the data collected with key stakeholders such as the City and County Councils, elected officials, transport engineers, and other relevant agencies,” he added.

Mr O’Donovan said that, although cycling as a form of transport has experienced a huge increase over the past few years, it is very important that this trend continues into the future.

He said: “With an obesity epidemic and climate breakdown looming on the horizon, it is vital we get more and more people out of cars and onto bikes.

“Listening to the feedback of people who already cycle is a great way to find ways to improve conditions and make cycling a more attractive option.”

According to Mr O’Donovan, research undertaken across several cities has shown that between 30 and 50 per cent of all car commuters are “interested but concerned” about making the switch to cycling.

“With over half the car trips in Cork under 5km, there is huge scope to increase our cycling modal share over the next few years in Cork,” he concluded.
