The crossover begins

This week I have mostly been thinking about transitioning my wardrobe properly over to autumn, while still trying to get the last few wears out of lighter fabrics, avoiding wearing tights and debating whether it really is time to start wearing knitwear again.

I mean really once you even start thinking about tights and knits, it’s game over and there’s no going back from this. I always try and hold off on the black opaques for as long as possible and I even once went to Riga in February and went bare legged such was my dedication to being fashion hardy. Yes, my legs were a rather interesting shade of corn beef purple, but I was determined to get into a spring frame of mind.

With knitwear it’s not so cut and dried and I feel like I can ever so slightly transition this a bit more softly. I’m almost at the stage where I’m about to retire my t-shirts and start wearing lightweight crew neck sweaters mainly in navy or black. I’m still not quite at the stage of incorporating a roll neck yet and will probably wait another few weeks for that.

I do quite like that stage before winter where you can wear a reasonably light jacket with just a roll neck underneath, perhaps a beret to accessorise and you will be as snug as bug and avoid the overheating that can come from chunkier knit wear. Really this lighter knitwear is ideal if you work somewhere where they like to crank up the heating.

I once made the mistake of wearing a super chunky roll neck jumper out for dinner one night and the heat of the restaurant and my garment made the night unbearable. It’s one of the fashion pitfalls of winter!

My absolute go-to for these crew necks are GAP and H&M on the high street or if you want to spend a little bit more, M&S do the softest cashmere versions. Just remember to follow the washing instructions to a tee or a small child may find themselves gifted an expensive shrunken sweater.

I also like this time of year because it’s total cardigan weather. I don’t mean a twee twinset although sometimes this can look cool worn with the right outfit.

I’m talking about this couple of weeks where you can easily wear a soft, oversized woollen cardigan in place of a jacket or blazer. H&M have the loveliest ones of these for €19.99 that come in a variety of neutral shades and look super with jeans or belted over midi dresses.

I’ve also spotted some really nice wrap over cardigans that look so soft and almost have a ballerina feel to them and while they look luxurious worn with jeans and gold accessories, they would also look stylish worn with a tulle dress or skirt and heels for a winter look that is both glam and warm.
