€33m school campus is to be largest in county
The sod has officially been turned on a new €33 million education campus set for Carrigaline.
Doing the honours was Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney who labelled the development as a “really significant step forward” for the Carrigaline area.
Cork Education and Training Board (CETB) will manage the construction of the new campus which will be home to three schools, catering for the educational needs of more than 1,000 primary, secondary and special needs pupils when completed.
The campus will include a two-storey, 24 classroom Gaelcholáiste with PE hall, a two-story, 24 classroom Gaelscoil with outdoor ball courts, and a single storey SONAS special needs facility including learning, administration and ancillary spaces, a GP hall, outdoor ball courts and play areas.
The Tánaiste described the project as “momentous in both scale and promise” and underlined the Government’s determination to underpin the nation’s future through education.
He said: “The Carrigaline Education Campus shows this work in action with the commitment of €33 million to this development which will greatly enhance the education of future generations of students.
“When completed it will be the largest non-third level education campus in Cork. This community deserves to be complimented for the way they campaigned to ensure the delivery of the new facilities.”
More than 100 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the new campus, with primary contractors MMD Construction aiming to complete the project for a February 2021.
Chief Executive of CETB Denis Leamy said: “Cork ETB appreciates the massive vote of confidence the Department of Education and Skills has given us.”
Also commenting on the project was MMD Construction director Cormac Smith who said he is delighted to be appointed as the main contractor.
He said: “We look forward to building the impressive buildings that will create a fantastic educational environment that will serve this community for many years to come.”
