Retired teachers launch new photography exhibition

An exhibition, curated by members of the Cork branch of the Retired Teachers' Association of Ireland (RTAI), will be launched today.

The exhibition is the work specifically of the camera group which was set up in 2016. With seven men and six women, a friend of the group, Tony Tobin, has led the group since its beginnings with members varying in expertise levels. The exhibition will be launched by the Chairperson of Cork RTAI, Pádraig Ó Conaill.

A spokesperson for the group said: “The marvellous thing about the group is that everyone shares their time and expertise, and we are all becoming great at critiquing our work. We go out on a shoot once a month, practising techniques. Locations for the shoot depend on the time of year, such as photographing bluebells in May, or deer in October - a recent dawn shoot in Killarney yielded amazing photos.”

Having set themselves a challenge earlier this year of holding an exhibition, those dreams will come to fruition this Thursday 5 December at Bishopstown Library. It will feature two photos per member with the launch taking place from 6-7.30pm and it will run until 20 December.

The RTAI provides services to retired primary teachers, such as info, support, advocacy and social activities.

The Cork branch is one of the most active in the country with regular activities such as coffee mornings, walks, hikes, a choir, dance classes, trips at home and abroad as well as one off events such as theatre visits, gallery visits and informative demonstrations and talks.
