Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) has welcome the announcement of €18.75 million in funding for refurbishment works.

CIT set for funding windfall

Over €18 million in funding has been assigned to CIT for refurbishment works on the Bishopstown campus.

With a student population of almost ten thousand on the Bishopstown campus alone, it is essential for the college that the core infrastructure buildings meet the requirements of a modern third level community.

Dr Barry O’Connor, CIT President, said: “This building work will result in a significant upgrade in facilities for students and staff.

“Revamping the 1970s building stock will also enhance CIT’s offering to Irish and international students alike. 2020 will be a busy year on campus as this refurbishment ramps up and construction work commences on the new CIT Sports Arena,” he said.

The funding is being allocated under Project Ireland 2040, which commits to investments of €2.2 billion in Ireland’s higher education infrastructure over the coming decade.

Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer said: “As an educator and a resident of Bishopstown, I’ve watched the growth and influence of CIT over the years. This refurbishment plan is so important especially in tandem with with the development of the Munster Technological Uninversity.”
