Legendary DJ and 2FM presenter Larry Gogan

'A legend and a genuine national institution'

Tributes are pouring in following the death of legendary broadcaster Larry Gogan at the age of 81.

Larry worked in radio broadcasting for almost 60 years, and will be best remembered for his work on RTÉ 2FM, where he was a host for 40 years before moving to RTÉ Gold. Born in Fairview, in North Dublin, Larry is credited with laying the programming foundations at 2FM, and for his impact on music in Ireland, promoting up and coming Irish musicians. Highlights of his broadcasting career include popular segments such as the often hilarious Just a Minute Quiz.

In a statement released this morning, President Michael D Higgins said: “For six decades, Larry Gogan made an indelible impact on Irish music, having promoted both up-and-coming and more established Irish musicians and sharing his infectious enthusiasm and passion for pop and rock music of all kinds.”

Director General of RTÉ Dee Forbes said: “Larry Gogan was a legend and a genuine national institution. He transcended generations – whether it was a hilarious moment on the Just a Minute Quiz, the breakneck countdown of the weekly top 40, or the first play of a Christmas song. We will miss you Larry.”

Paying tribute to the broadcaster, Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan said: “We have lost another of our cherished broadcasters. He was loved by the listeners and artists alike. My condolences to his family and friends.  Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam uasal.”

Friend and colleague Marty Whelan tweeted: “A dear friend. A wonderful man. May he rest in peace.”

Joe Duffy tweeted: “From Just A Minute Quiz to the Golden Hour Larry was the soundtrack of our lives from the 1960s to 2020s. I visited him ten days ago , he was in his usual great form with his loving family, his beautiful honeyed voice, the quick wit and deep intelligence shone through.“

Larry’s wife Florrie died in 2002. He is survived by their five children and twelve grandchildren.

The announcement follows the recent death of RTÉ broadcaster Marian Finucane, whose funeral takes place today. The funeral will take place at midday today at St Brigid's Church in Kill, Co Kildare, followed by a private burial.
