A Cork-ophony of colour

A colouring book has been launched by Cork County Council celebrating the culture and heritage of county Cork.

The book was supported by the Heritage Council, and through the Creative Ireland Programme, Cork County Council and the Creative Ireland Culture Team. Entitled ‘The Colourful Heritage of County Cork’, a range of different illustrators worked on the project producing a delightful colouring book for all ages (don’t be shy adult colourists!).

Speaking at the launch, Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Christopher O’Sullivan said: “People are immensely proud of our county and these two publications give a great overview and understanding of so much of the wonderful culture and heritage that is on offer here. I commend everyone involved and in particular those from the public who engaged in these publications.”

The book is a special publication as part of the hugely successful Heritage of County Cork series. In keeping with the spirit of these publications, the colouring book is an invitation for everyone to get involved with county Cork’s rich and colourful heritage. A number of sites also are included with the intention of encouraging the public to visit them.

The initiative has engaged academic, local and amateur historians, archaeologists and enthusiasts from throughout the county.

The launch coincided with the release of the seventh instalment of the Heritage of County Cork series, entitled ‘The Industrial Heritage of County Cork’.

County Cork has a rich industrial heritage, with close to 300 mills in the archaeological record. This publication examines the earliest origins of industry in county Cork, with a particular focus on the industrial revolution and the inclusion of sites from up to and including the 20th century.

Cork County Council’s Chief Executive Tim Lucey said: “The Heritage of County Cork publication series is one that is growing in recognition year after year, and one that has already been recognised nationally at the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards.”

Over 50 submissions were received for the industrial heritage publication and a number of budding artists submitted some great drawings for inclusion in ‘The Colourful Heritage of County Cork’. “Covering sites from Youghal to Allihies and Mallow to Rockchapel, the participation by the public in the books is paramount to their success,” continued Mr Lucey.

The books are available in bookshops and copies are also available on Floor 3 of the County Hall.

‘Industrial Heritage of County Cork’ retails at €10 and the Colourful Heritage of County Cork retails at €5. For more information on these and other heritage initiatives visit the heritage website of Cork County Council at corkcoco.ie/arts-heritage or email cork.heritage@corkcoco.ie.
