Birthday cakes for those in knead

A birthday isn’t complete without some tasty cake but sadly for some this isn’t possible because of their living situation.

However, some sweet help is at hand thanks to Consider it Cakes, an initiative helping people who cannot afford or don’t have access to an oven or equipment to make a cake. This includes people who are homeless and those living in direct provision.

The brainchild of 24 year old Franciska Acs and her boyfriend Corkman Darragh Kiely, Consider it Cakes began several weeks ago in Dublin and is now in the mix in Cork with a team of 30 bakers and drivers ready to bake and deliver cakes across Cork city and county.

Two cakes have already been delivered to those living in direct provision in Cork and another five will be delivered this weekend to the direct provision centre at the Kinsale Road Accommodation Centre, not for birthdays but to raise awareness and inform residents about the expansion of Consider it Cakes to Cork.

Franciska told the Cork Independent: “We have been overwhelmed by all of the support we’ve received and by the amount of volunteers who are willing to help, from bakers to drivers. Everyone deserves a birthday cake and it has brought so much joy to those we’ve delivered to in Cork and Dublin. It really does make their day and it’s such a small gesture.”

All flavours of cakes are available and people can pick their favourite treats on top like fresh strawberries, marshmallows, biscuits or whatever they want - which they otherwise might not be able to afford.

She said: “All the bakers love doing this and it’s great seeing how happy we are making people by giving them a birthday cake. We’ve received some really cute messages from those who have received a cake so far.

“Without all the amazing volunteers, this would have been never possible. We are truly overwhelmed by all the kindness of everyone who wants to get involved. We are in a way delivering happiness and when we deliver a cake we make their day just as much as they make ours.”

She added: “There are many families and young kids currently living in temporary homeless accommodation and direct provision centres who don’t have the facilities, but everybody deserves a birthday cake on their special day.

“There are a few ways people can get in touch and learn more about Consider it Cakes from social media to a phone call.”
