These Yanks are on our Green List

Having been forced to put their debut album on hold, one of Cork's most exciting bands is back and ready to pick up where they let off. 

The Dagenham Yanks have locally released their new, vinyl-only album ‘Trance-substantiation’ which was originally set to release earlier in the year.

Asked why the band decided to go with a vinyl-only release, frontman Mark O’Sullivan said it was an attempt to recapture a lost era of Cork when music lovers would “potter into a vinyl store” and spend hours looking for something to take home.

“It's a tangible thing that we can hold and look at, and it adds a bit more value to the whole process. Some of the band are from a generation where, for us, mp3s and things like that never felt very real,” Mark explains.

The group, made up of musicians ranging in age from 19 to 49, have been playing together since 2017 and have just released their first official single ‘Shamone’.

“The feedback has been great, and the most important thing at the end of the day is the actual music,” says Mark.

Next month, all going well, the Dagenham Yanks plan to release their new album on a national scale with radio and TV appearances all in the pipeline.

The Yanks also have a number of social distancing events coming up, but Mark says the future is still uncertain for live music.

“I have a normal day job, but a lot of the full-timers have had a tough, tough run of it. I think there's a huge need for festivals and live music and a bit of general craic. I think there will be an explosion of activity, but when it's going to happen is the real question.”
