Volunteers in Kenya prepare isolation beds with the help of Cork charity Brighter Communities Worldwide.

Climb high for Kenya!

A Cork charity that works to change lives in rural Kenya is asking the public to dust off their hiking boots and lend a foot to a great cause.

Brighter Communities Worldwide has been working in East Africa since 2002, however, the arrival of Covid-19 has threatened to undo years of progress.

To raise funds the charity, which was co-founded by Cork woman Maria Kidney, is running its annual Mountain Challenge on 15 August.

This year’s challenge will see participants take on the stunning slopes of the Galtee Mountains on the Cork, Limerick and Tipperary boarder.

Hikers will have two options. They can either climb right to the summit of Galtymore, or they can hike across the Galtee mountain range. Both options take roughly five hours to complete and groups will be led by experienced guides.

For those who wish to contribute, but are unable to participate in the climb, Brighter Communities Worldwide has suggested a number of virtual options such as climbing Patrick’s Hill in Cork city, or even climbing your own stairs at home.
