No injuries in Midleton mail blaze

No-one was injured in a fire that ripped through Midleton’s post office late on Tuesday night An Post has confirmed.

The large blaze was noticed at approximately 1.30am by a local resident. Fire crews from Midleton and Cobh sped to the scene where they spent a number of hours fighting the fire.

Emergency services were forced to close the town’s main road over night and reopened it shortly before 9am yesterday morning.

No parcels or mail were damaged although An Post has confirmed that the damage was “devastating” and that the post office would be out of service for the foreseeable future.

The owner of the post office managed to get out safely after the blaze began early yesterday morning.

A spokesperson for An Post said that post offices services will be available at Carrigtwohill and Castlemartyr immeadiately so that social welfare payments can be paid out.

The spokesperson said: “It is likely that all Department of Employment Action and Social Protection customers will be catered for at Castlemartyr post office. Payments will be available there after midday Wednesday.”

An Post said that once it has dealt with and the immediate aftermath of the fire has been assessed, work will begin immediately to restore full service to Midleton.

“Fortunately all our mails and parcels processing for the Midleton area is carried out at our delivery service unit at a separate location and was not impacted by the fire,” the spokesperson said.
