Cllr Oliver Moran welcomed the funding.

€4m boost for city projects

Pedestrian and cycle infrastructure is about to improve on Leeside after a €4 million fund was announced recently.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has allocated €4 million to Cork City Council to support pedestrian and cyclist movement and to enhance accessibility in the city.

It’s part of a €55 million fund which was allocated under the July Jobs Stimulus Plan announced by the Government last month for Cork and other counties.

An equivalent funding programme is in place through the Department of Transport for all other local authority areas.

A further €42m has been applied for by Cork City Council for 2021, which will be assessed by the Government said Green Party councillor for Cork City North East, Oliver Moran. He added that this was the start of a new phase of green investment in Cork.

Cllr Moran explained: “This is the start of a new phase of investment in active and sustainable transport in the city directly as a result of the Green Party being in government. These are practical measures that will make existing infrastructure better.

“They include improvements to footpaths and zebra crossing, up to 50 new radar-controlled speed signs, and automatically raising and lowering bollards to keep city streets safe for pedestrians and accessible for businesses.”
