UCC is looking to recruit 100 members of the public to deliver their vision for the future of the internet.

Public sought for global discussion

A discussion about artificial intelligence and digital identity will be hosted by UCC next month, the college announced this week.

The EITIC research cluster in Cork University Business School at UCC is organising an online dialogue to give a voice to citizens on internet governance issues and build recommendations which will be submitted to decision makers at a local and regional level.

UCC said on Wednesday that it wants to recruit 100 members of the public from all walks of life to be involved in this online dialogue from 9-10 October.

Participants do not need any special knowledge in order to participate, and the dialogue’s goal is to bring the views of ordinary citizens to the decision makers. It comes at a time when the internet is becoming the backbone of social interactions given the current Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions.

The results will be submitted to the Internet Governance Forum 2020, under the theme of internet united.

Whether in Europe, Africa, South America, North America or Asia, citizens all over the world will gather in their respective countries to discuss the future of the internet. The process is coordinated by a coalition of global partners coming from national governments, international organisations, civil society and the private sector.

The topics that will be discussed include the ‘internet and me’, ‘building a strong digital identity’, ‘creating an inclusive digital public sphere’ and ‘governing artificial intelligence’.

The consultation will be held online from 9am-1pm. Attendance at the citizen vision workshop is free but enrollment is necessary and needs to be received before 2 October 2020.
