Time to hit a home run

People of Cork can walk, run or crawl their way into the hearts of the homeless community this month by taking part in a new fundraising campaign.

The #Homerun initiative, by local charity Good Shepherd Cork (GSC), will raise much needed funds for homeless families as they prepare for the return to school.

GSC is calling on Corkonians to help out by walking, running, or even crawling a distance of their choosing from 12-13 September, and then sharing their own homerun on social media using the hashtag #Homerun.

People are being asked to donate whatever they can to the charity via its website goodshepherdcork.ie. A donation of €4 can also be made by texting ‘EdelHouse’ to 50300.

Due to Covid-19 regulations the Cork Marathon and the Ladies Mini Marathon, both of which contribute significantly to GSC’s annual fundraising efforts, were cancelled earlier in the year.

Supporting the initiative is local entrepreneur Dan Sweeney who said he is confident that the people of Cork will come together “as they always do” to support those most in need.

“#Homerun will help raise much needed funds to reduce the stress on families who are homeless as they prepare their children for the return to school,” he said.

Also commenting was GSC’s CEO Allison Aldred who said that the money raised will help support 80 families currently living in emergency accommodation.

GSC is an independent, Cork-based charity providing services for women, children and families who are homeless or vulnerable to homelessness.
