Cork City Council will have to make cutbacks to tackle €5 million deficit.

City Council records €5m loss

Cork City Council has suffered a revenue loss of close to €5 million due to Covid-19, with sweeping cutbacks now expected across the board.

That’s according to Deputy Lord Mayor, Fine Gael’s Cllr Shane O’Callaghan, who has described the situation as “quite grim”.Speaking to the Cork Independent following a series of briefings held by Director of Finance John Hallahan, Cllr O’Callaghan said that there was no point in “sugar-coating” the situation and that many difficult decisions now lie ahead.

He said: “There’s been a massive drop in revenue and we're looking at dramatic cuts across the board. It's now a matter of determining the level of cuts involved and whether we can generate some revenue in other ways to soften the blow. But either way, there is going to have to be cuts.”

According to the deputy lord mayor, there is currently a plan being put together and every department within the council is being looked at, with further meetings scheduled for the coming days and weeks.
