Major Mallow park works to begin

Work will start soon on placing and constructing a new path in Mallow Town Park as plans continue to make an integrated park network in the town.

The plans include making Mallow Castle Park, Mallow Town Park and the Spa House Park a landmark amenity and tourist destination and it also includes the potential development of the existing gardens and historic landscape at Mallow Castle.

Works will involve the extension of existing concrete pathway from the pedestrian bridge in the Town Park below the Castle Park via the rear entrance to Castlelands Housing Estate and as far as Lower’s Leap area.

The addition of a new three metre-wide concrete pathway will also be included to accommodate a future 1,080m cycleway.

Works on the new pathway are expected to be complete in December 2020 and in order to allow for the works to be safely undertaken access to the area will be restricted at intervals during this time.

Mayor of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley said: “This development will mark a turning point for Mallow and its growing community, greatly enhancing quality of life for the town and its neighbours.”

Speaking at the contract signing in Mallow, Niall Healy, Director of Services, Cork County Council added: “Mallow is a key target for development, uniquely placed to connect communities throughout North Cork and serving as a gateway to the region for tourists and commuters. These works go hand in hand with Cork County Council’s Project ACT in supporting social and economic restoration in Cork County. Our strategic developments here will secure Mallow’s future as a tourist destination and a hub for community and economic activity long into the future.”

Leading on from works undertaken in 2020, Cork County Council has appointed Murlyn Civil Engineering Ltd of Gortroe as contractor for the placement and construction of the new pathway in Mallow Town Park at the cost of €246,351.75, including VAT.

Cork County Council was successful in receiving a grant of €200,000 from the Department of Transport’s Jobs Stimulus Funding for Active Travel and Climate Change Adaptation Measures.

The remaining funding balance is being provided from Cork County Council funding to deliver this key project for Mallow Town Park.
