Actors will play to empty seats at the Everyman this autumn, but listeners at home will hear every footstep.

Show must go on

The Everyman Theatre will continue with its planned programme despite the new lockdown, with a host of stage performances to be broadcast live in the coming weeks.

With the Opera House and the Triskel currently closed due to restrictions, The Everyman has taken on the challenge of keeping performing art alive on Leeside.

Having originally launched the ‘Play it by Ear’ programme at the onset of Level 3, the theatre has now had to make further adaptions in order to bring its autumn list of performances to the public in line with Level 5.

“So now we are going ahead with an empty auditorium but with the performers on stage performing live,” Everyman Communications Manager Claire O’Sullivan told the Cork Independent.

“I think that’s the magic of it, the fact that’s it’s live,” she added.

First up for an audio-only broadcast is ‘Tom Crean – Arctic Explorer’ to be performed solo by writer Aidan Dooley, who will be in full costume playing to an empty room this Saturday.

Following that is Cork play ‘The Four Faced Liar’, a rehearsed reading performed by six under the direction of Emelie FitzGibbon.

“It’s going to be a bit like an old-fashioned radio drama. We also hope to have something for Christmas too. Obviously it won’t be a panto, there will be something,” said Ms O’Sullivan.
