George Pearl plans to move to Cork this year with his fiancé, his daughter and his dog, to fulfil a life long dream.

Delivering dreams

A young Englishman whose dream is to become a delivery driver here on Leeside is calling on the people of Cork for help.

George Pearl, originally from Southend on Sea in England, plans to move to Cork in the near future to be close to his family who are from the area.

Having previously worked as a pharmacy technician and then for local government in the UK, George says he can’t think of a better job than driving around Cork delivering items.

“I am moving to Cork so my daughter can grow up in a beautiful and friendly place. My whole family is in Cork and I want my daughter to have the sort of childhood I had, surrounded by great people,” George told the Cork Independent.

George, 28, will move here with his fiancé, his baby daughter and his dog, and says he wants to work in delivery because it’s honest work which “won’t keep you chained to a desk”.

“I wouldn't mind what I deliver at all, but as a boy I always thought being a postie was a great job. I love being outdoors and I love exploring,” he said.

With Brexit now finally done with, George will have to get his hands on an Irish driver’s license, something he says will not be difficult.

“My UK licence is no longer valid to drive in Ireland since the UK left the EU. However, it’s super easy to swap it for an Irish licence, which I will do as soon as I arrive,” he said.

George also said the state of Irish roads is no concern for him and that he looks forward to less “manic” traffic than in the UK.

He said: “I've not driven in Cork myself but have spent many hours as a passenger. The roads are definitely rough in places, but it's not as fast or manic as I am used to here. Busy Cork traffic is like Southend on a good day.”

Having applied for as many delivery jobs as he can find, George says he has only received rejections or no answer at all, often due to his lack of commercial driving experience.

However, his determination to come and live in the city of his dreams has not wavered and he is now asking the people of Cork for help in securing a job as a delivery man.

He said: “Cork has always appealed to me. The people, the culture, the humour and the beauty of the place. It really is like nowhere else I've ever been.”
