Transitioning your wardrobe to a brighter future

Well, I hope everyone is making it through this lockdown okay including a Blue Monday as if we didn’t have enough to be dealing with!

I actually am a fan of January and all the promise of freshness and new beginnings, so I don’t tend to go in for that Blue Monday stuff although I’m very aware that everyone is affected differently and so we all have to do what we can to get through it.

Sometimes I just need a leisurely morning where I’ll get up, have a nice breakfast and then return to the cosy leaba with a cup of coffee. Other mornings I’m the total opposite and the best thing is to spring out of bed and take Blanche for a walk first thing. Sometimes there is nothing nicer than being up super early and getting out for a walk.

On these mornings I’m at my most productive and so I head to the home office/wardrobe and start musing on different sartorial dilemmas like how can I start transitioning my wardrobe to spring without catching a chill?

Maybe I’m mad considering we are still stuck in January but all I know is I’m feeling like injecting a bit of lightness into my wardrobe. I’m also hoping it will get me out of the tracksuits a bit more and back into my everyday clothes.

The first little change I’ll be making, and it’s a super easy one to make, is changing up my denims. I’ll be relegating my black denim and dark indigo colours to the back of the wardrobe and pulling forward the lighter shades.

It’s as simple as giving the lighter shades a more prominent place in the wardrobe meaning you reach for them more frequently. Of course, this also works well with another little switch up and that is adding a little bit of pastel or lighter colours to your looks.

In particular I find lighter coloured knitwear is a great way to do this and so my heavy burgundy, black and forest green knits will give way to creams, beiges, lilac and pinks. You’re still keeping warm but you’ve just changed that colour palette a bit.

I’ll also be looking at putting away the really heavy knitwear and instead wearing my somewhat lighter rollnecks but as they are quite fitted to the body they are still cosy and can be easily layered under other items.

Now I might be crazy here and really prematurely throwing myself full force into spring but I’m considering ditching my trusty tights. Maybe just on the odd day here or there when it’s a bit milder than usual. To ease myself into it I’ll be going for a combination of knee high or over the knee boots with a longer hemline so no leg will be exposed but it still makes me feel like I’m shedding a layer.

It also makes me more inclined towards wearing more layers but ones that are lighter in feel and texture, so instead of my heavy winter coat, I’ll be using my trench coat a lot more. The trench is stylish and practical and works well over everything from dresses to knitwear and jeans. Now all we need is the weather to co-operate and hopefully there will be not a hint of a Beast from the East this spring!
