The original planning application by developers MWB Two Limited caused significant anger amongst Bessborough survivors.

No apartments at Bessborough

There was good news this week for survivors of the Bessborough mother and baby home with Cork City Council rejecting planning permission for a housing development on the grounds.

The proposed project by developers MWB Two Limited was strongly opposed by the Cork Survivors & Supporters Alliance who want a proper examination of the site where they believe the remains for 923 babies who died at the home may be buried.

The council refused planning on grounds that it would contravene the Cork City Development Plan 2015-2021 which had zoned the land for landscape preservation.

The developers had made a separate application to An Bord Pleanála for a further 179 apartments, a decision for which is still pending.
