Leeside’s tea pride

A Leeside tea lover has taken to social media to ask a very “serious, honest and important” question about how many cups of tea are being consumed in Cork at the moment.

The post on the Cork Reddit page 'r/cork' has received a large number of comments from Corkonians eager to share their daily lockdown tea drinking statistics.

The individual who posted the question stirred up further debate by asking what tea brand people liked the most, naming Cork brand Barry’s Tea as their own personal favourite.

One commentor said they drink upwards of six cups of tea a day now, confessing however that they are often guilty of getting distracted and “letting half cups go cold”. They also asked jokingly is if there was “anything else than Barry’s?”.

Another tea-lover took the biscuit when they confessed to drinking at least ten cups a day and even occasionally slipping in “a little Powers” to keep things interesting during lockdown.

One passionate Redditor insisted that Barry’s was the only tea for Leesiders and that “true Corkonians know the difference” between the good and the bad.

But it wasn’t all Barry’s drinkers, with one self-professed “tea snob” commenting that they only buy loose leaf tea and that all tea bags taste the same.

“I buy it from Loose Leaf, usually get some Darjeeling, some Lapsang Souchong (delicious smoked Chinese tea), maybe a bit of Earl Grey and whatever else tickles my fancy. The Lyons vs Barry’s wars go a bit over my head as a result,” they wrote.

Overall, between five and ten cups a day seems to be the norm on Leeside, with Barry’s the clear favourite.
