County Mayor's Diary

This time last year, we were taking our first steps into the unknown.

It was a scary time, and though many of our fears were realised over the coming months, we held firm together. We flattened the curve, got to enjoy the delights of our hometowns and villages, and rediscovered the beauty and magic on our doorsteps. Now, one year on we are wiser to the situation. We know what we can look forward to if we work together to reduce the spread of the virus. We are also at the beginning of the vaccine rollout that will offer protection for our community as the year progresses.

By continuing to adhere to the guidelines, we are preparing to make the most of spring, summer and the good weather that comes with it.

Already preparations are underway to provide safe summer activities in Cork. Cork County Council has joined Cork City Council and the Port of Cork in announcing Cork Harbour Festival’s flagship Ocean to City Race, with a new format that protects participants.

Crews can choose a route that suits them and will be given designated time windows. Being from Youghal I’m especially excited for this and proud of the council for sponsoring a great celebration of our maritime haven. The council is also providing a free gardening course with horticulturist Aoife Munn for all Cork county residents. Details of both these events are available in the news section of corkcoco.ie.

The return of school attendance this week will be a welcome relief for many students and parents. I am especially happy for the young people who can see their friends again after what has been a difficult few months. While this is a step in the right direction for returning to all the things we miss, this is also a critical time for our response to Covid-19. With students back in the classroom, it is now more vital than ever that everyone keeps their guard up and adheres to public health guidelines.

Knowing when and how to restrict movements and self-isolate will be vital in the coming weeks and months. Self-isolating means staying in your room if you experience symptoms of Covid-19, are waiting for a test appointment or results from a test or if you receive a positive test result. The entire household must stay at home once one member of the household has tested positive for Covid-19.

This can be tough, but by doing so you are protecting those who are closest to you, and the wider community. Make sure to contact your GP if you experience any symptoms. For clear and helpful instructions visit hse.ie. Our Community Support Programme is available for non-medical assistance and support on 1800-805819 or text 085-8709010.

Let’s continue to hold firm and look forward to brighter days ahead.
