Gardaí seize drugs after car hits garda vehicle

Gardaí have made a major cocaine seizure and arrested a man after he drove a car into a garda vehicle during an operation near Glanmire yesterday evening.

Gadaí seized around €140,000 of suspected cocaine when they stopped a car close to midnight on the M8 near Glanmire.

As part of Operation Tara, at 11.25pm, a vehicle was intercepted by gardaí on the M8 at Glanmire as part of an operation conducted by the Divisional Drugs Unit Cork City and the District Drugs Unit Anglesea Street.

The driver of the suspect vehicle tried to evade gardaí and threw a plastic bag onto the central median grass verge of the roadway. The suspect vehicle then made contact with an official garda vehicle and came to a halt. No injuries were reported.

The driver of the car, a man in his late 30s, was arrested by gardaí and he is currently being detained at Mayfield Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

The discarded plastic bag was retrieved and €140,000 of suspected cocaine was seized. Investigations are ongoing.
