More human remains found underneath pub

The skeletal remains of a further five people have now been found at the former Nancy Spain’s site on Barrack Street, bringing the total number to six so far.

It is thought that the remains are from the 18th century or earlier and will not be subject to garda investigation.

The remains were found beneath the well-known former pub and music venue which is being demolished as part of a social housing project delivering 32 housing units. Speaking on 'Morning Ireland' on Wednesday, Cork City Council archaeologist Ciara Brett said the bones will be radiocarbon dated as soon as possible.

Ms Brett said the remains will be examined by an expert who will be able to identify the sex and age of the remains as well as the possibility of identifying various diseases and how they died. She described the remains as “quite fragmentary” on the RTÉ Radio 1 programme while also adding that they predate the 19th century building they were found under. The excavation will be completed by the end of the week, she said.
