The Glucksman art gallery in UCC is arguably one of Cork’s most strikingly futuristic buildings and possibly a sign of that’s to come.

Imagine Cork in 80 years

Professionals from the world of the built environment have been invited to share their vision of what Cork city might look like in 80 years as part of a new design competition.

Engineers, architects, landscape architects, and other relevant professionals will propose an innovative, creative, and sustainable vision of Cork city and the metropolitan area for 2101 in an aim to reimagine Cork as a waterside regional city on the edge of Europe.

Applicants are encouraged to prepare a vision of the future, including sketch design proposals and are free to collaborate with other professional disciplines.

The purpose of the competition is to engage engineers and other relevant professionals in the story of design in Cork and to find solutions to these challenges in a sustainable fashion.

A second competition for undergraduate and post graduate students asks them to propose innovative solutions for a future crossing of the River Lee and/or Cork Harbour.

Participants are encouraged to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams of up to four people from disciplines such as engineering, architecture, and urban and landscape planning.

Entries should explore both the economic, spatial, and societal needs of the Cork metropolitan area and are asked to prepare conceptual sketch design proposals for their ideas.

Entry and further details on both competitions can be found at engineersirelandcork.ie. The closing date for expressions of interest is 21 January and the closing date for submissions is 4 February.
