70 jobs to be lost at pharma giant MSD

One of Ireland’s leading healthcare companies has confirmed that it will lay off 70 workers from its site in Cork.

MSD Ireland said the reduction of its workforce at its plant in Brinny, near Innishannon, is part of the “ongoing evolution” of the company.

The group was established more than 50 years ago in Ireland and currently employs a team of 2,800 people across six sites around the country.

Its Cork site has a long track record in the manufacture of key medicines and strives to continuously evolve in order to meet the needs of patients around the world.

MSD Brinny has been in operation for more than 35 years and is a strategic site within the global MSD network.

The group said the decision to cut 70 jobs is a key part of MSD Brinny’s evolving site strategy to ensure continued viability for the long-term.

A statement released by the company said: “MSD is committed to Ireland. In total to date, MSD has invested over $4 billion in our Irish operations and our annual turnover ranks us as one of Ireland’s top 20 companies. MSD Irish sites manufacture approximately half of MSD’s top twenty products, helping save and enhance lives in over sixty countries around the world.”
