The art of shed-itation on Leeside

Leeside artist Kieran Meegan’s latest exhibition, ‘Meditations & Imaginings’, will take up residence at Wilton Library from 4 May and will stay there for one month.

The exhibition is a collection of abstract works of acrylic paint on canvas, created during what the artist describes as “endless days of isolation” brought about by the pandemic and subsequent restrictions.

Kieran said he used lockdown to seize an opportunity to create a series of paintings based on his practice of meditation, something he has been doing for years.

“Whilst meditating, I see vivid colours in a whole array of patterns, blends and shapes, so I decided to capture these thoughts through paint,” explained Kieran.

The whole series was created in a tiny wooden shed in Kieran’s back garden where he focused on colour texture in depth.

“My little back yard shed is not the ideal environment for painting, especially in winter as it has no heating system, but despite the cold and damp, I would continue to paint,” said Kieran.

Having had his previous collection displayed in O’Sho at the end of barrack Street before the pandemic, Kieran says he enlisted the help of a very special person to assist him in naming his new pieces for what will be only his second exhibit.

He said: “I decided to enlist the help of my very bright and imaginative five year old granddaughter Fiadh to help me name my paintings. Her vivid imagination was so helpful and it was fascinating to see and hear her description of what she saw in these abstract works. The perspective of a child is wonderful to witness and that alone was what made all this work worthwhile.”
