Sarah Rosingrave’s raku fired stonewear piece ‘Fireplace’ will be on display from today at the ‘Clay and Canvas’ exhibition at the Lavit Gallery.

Clay and canvas collide

An exhibition celebrating the works of some of Cork’s most prolific painters and ceramic artists will begin today, Thursday.

The Lavit Gallery’s ‘Clay and Canvas’ exhibition explores both art mediums and how they each use texture, colour, form and narrative to tell their stories.

The exhibition will run from today until 22 August and coincides with Craft Month 2022, an island of Ireland-wide celebration of the craft sector.

The surfaces of ceramic objects have long been used as a means of artistic expression and design, with artists working with slips and glazes, adding pigments and oxides and experimenting throughout the firing process.

Artists working with clay can employ painterly qualities to create abstract, landscape and figurative works.

Ceramic artists featured in the exhibition include Sinead Fagan, Nanette Ledwith, Chloe Lennon, Andrew Ludick, Jane Seymour, and Katherina Treml, with paintings by Tom Climent and Rebecca Bradley, and drawings by Megan Eustace.

Artists Katherine Boucher Beug, Emma O’Hara and Sarah Roseingrave will exhibit ceramic pieces, as well as paintings, drawings and prints.

The opening reception for ‘Clay and Canvas’ will take place today from 5.30-7.30pm at the Lavit Gallery on Wandesford Quay in the city centre.
