Garda in critical condition

A garda is in critical condition at CUH this morning after their car was struck while stopped to assist a broken down vehicle last night.

Shortly before 7pm yesterday the unmarked garda patrol car pulled over to help the vehicle on the N25, at the Youghal bypass.

The garda car was struck by another vehicle causing serious injuries to its occupant who was rushed to CUH. The driver of the other vehicle was also removed to CUH with non-life threatening injuries.

The N25 at the Youghal bypass was subsequently closed and the scene was preserved, with local diversions put in place. The bypass is expected to remain closed until 12pm today.

Local traffic will be detoured through Youghal town and anyone driving from Wexford is encouraged to use the N72 Dungarvan to Fermoy to go to Cork city.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the collision and are asking anyone with information to contact Midleton Garda Station 021-4621550, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666111, or any garda station.

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling on the Youghal bypass N25 from 6.30-7pm on Sunday evening are asked to make this footage available to gardaí.

There is no further information at this time.
