County Mayor's Diary Cllr Danny Collins

Hasn’t the last week of glorious sunshine and fine weather created a sense that summer is here and if summer is here then that great Munster tradition is busy with preparations.

The Cork Summer Show 2023 promises a weekend full of fun and entertainment for the whole family and an opportunity to explore our rich agricultural and food heritage. This year's show is the biggest yet!

The Cork Summer Show 2023 will take place on 17 and 18 June at the Cork Show Grounds. It's the biggest show, with 20 themed zones offering a wide range of activities, including music, entertainment, kids' activities, animals, art and more.

The event features a large market, the Food Village showcasing local food culture, and an Enterprise Zone for start-ups. Sustainability is emphasized, with waste segregation and eco-friendly packaging. Cork County Council is the lead sponsor, providing services and support. The show has been a summer highlight for over two centuries, showcasing the best of Cork. It plays a vital role in the community, and the council's support ensures its growth. Put the dates in your diary, calendar now and don’t miss out.

Speaking of sunshine, the sun shone in Bantry for everyone on the evening of Mayor of the County Annual Charity Dinner held at the Westlodge in Bantry. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of the evening. Your support and dedication have made a significant impact in raising much-needed funds for our community.

The evening was truly memorable, filled with fantastic food and entertainment that celebrated the best of Cork County and its rich maritime heritage. It was an honour to mark my year in office surrounded by such generosity and goodwill.

Most importantly, I want to highlight the significance of our cause. The funds raised during the charity dinner will benefit two deserving organisations. Cancer Connect, a not-for-profit organisation, plays a vital role in coordinating transport to Cork hospitals for patients undergoing radiotherapy, chemotherapy treatments, and cancer-related appointments. The Bandon Hyperbaric Oxygen Centre another notable not-for-profit, houses state-of-the-art oxygen chambers, offering treatment to a wide range of patients with various conditions across West Cork and from much further afield.

Your generosity and compassion have made a real difference, and for that, I am truly grateful. Your unwavering support and dedication to our community exemplify the true spirit of Cork county.

I am thrilled to announce the signing of the contract for Bantry Relief Road Phase 1. This much-awaited project will bring significant relief to Bantry, improving access to the town from the northern direction and the Beara Peninsula. This is a crucial step forward for Bantry. I hope everyone has been making the most of the sunshine and soaking up the vitamin D.
