Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Danny Collins.

County Mayor’s Diary

Summer is here, and along with it comes the joy of beach days and swimming in the ocean. I am pleased to announce that our dedicated beach lifeguard team is once again ready to ensure the safety of the public along our stunning coast.

This year, our beach lifeguards have adopted the motto, "holding hands saves lives". It serves as a reminder of the importance of parental supervision and vigilance in keeping children safe in any water environment. Last summer, our lifeguards successfully reunited 23 children with their parents, an increase from the previous year. It is crucial that parents and guardians refrain from using inflatable boats, beds, and toys on open water, as our temperate climate and strong winds make it unsafe. We urge everyone to swim at lifeguarded waterways and leave the inflatables behind.

You will see our beach lifeguards raising their red and yellow flags to indicate when they are on duty, from 10:30am to 7pm daily. They will be present on weekends in June, full-time in July and August, and the first 2 weekends of September. Please note that due to staff availability, some locations may not operate at certain times. For up-to-date information on lifeguarded beaches, visit the Cork County Council beach lifeguards Facebook page.

Speaking of beaches, I am delighted to announce that Garretstown Beach has regained its Blue Flag status. Once the necessary conditions, such as recycling facilities, are in place, we will proudly raise the flag. This achievement brings the total number of International Blue Flag awards and National Green Coast wards for 2023 in county Cork to an impressive 28. It reflects the remarkable efforts and dedication of everyone involved, demonstrating the unwavering spirit of our community.

On a lighter note, I am thrilled to announce the return of the Special Music Event Scheme in West Cork. This community-led initiative supports local music groups by providing grant funding for up to 4 events in the region. Audiences can look forward to exceptional performances by talented musicians, showcasing the rich musical heritage of West Cork. With events taking place in Bandon, Kinsale, Skibbereen, Clonakilty, and Dunmanway, there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to enjoy the vibrant music culture of our county.

I was delighted to reopen the Dursey Island cable car after an extensive €1.6 million upgrade. This iconic landmark holds great historical and cultural significance for Cork county.

The improved cable car service ensures the safety and accessibility of this unique transportation link. It is not only vital for islanders but also a cherished attraction that adds to the natural beauty and tourism potential of our region. I would like to express my gratitude to all those involved in making this project a reality.

As we embrace the summer season, let us cherish the beauty of our coastline, enjoy the vibrant music culture, and appreciate the unique attractions that Cork county has to offer. Together, we can create a safer, more sustainable, and vibrant community for all.
