Josh Honohan, central defender with Cork City FC

When you were small, what did you want to be as a grown-up?

My dream was always to be a professional footballer when I grew up.

Tell us about your career progression to your role today:

Having played with Carrigaline throughout my youth, I switched to Cork City U17 when I turned 17 and played in the academy for 2 years at both U17 and U19 levels.

After a couple of months at playing at U19 level, I signed with the senior team where I made a couple of appearances throughout that season. The following season, unfortunately, was disrupted due to injury.

Last year I played consistently where we went on to win the first division title and get promoted to the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.

I’m currently playing for Cork City FC in the premier division.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?

The process of constantly trying to improve to help the team and win games.

What motivates you?

The 2 things that really motivate me are firstly trying to become the best version of myself by becoming the best player I can become. It's an ambition of mine that when I look back at my career, I don’t look back at it with regret that I could have worked harder.

Secondly, winning is something that motivates me as it’s the most important factor of the job.

What advice would you give your 15 year old self?

Enjoy working hard, be patient and try to make yourself comfortable in uncomfortable situations.

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

I’m currently in UCC studying Commerce so I'd be busy with my college while also probably working part-time.

What is your greatest life or career achievement to-date?

My greatest career achievement to date is winning the first division title last year and helping Cork City FC get promoted back to the premier division.

Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?

Without a doubt it’s my parents. They have and continue to support me at every stage of my life. They have sacrificed loads so myself and my brother can try to achieve our dreams and for that I cannot thank them enough. Also, their hard-work and dedication are traits that inspired me from a young age and are traits I carry with me to this day.

What is the life dream now?

My dream is to become the best soccer player I can be, and have a long, successful playing career.

How do you switch off?

I do this by spending time with my friends. Playing golf is another passion of mine and is a hobby that helps me switch off. I also like to relax by watching movies.

What is your favourite Cork memory?

My favourite Cork memory is watching the Munster match with my dad against South Africa in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

What is your favourite place in Cork?

My favourite place in Cork would either be Douglas Golf Club or Fountainstown beach during the summer.

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

'Decide. Commit. Act. Succeed. Repeat.'

When are you at your happiest?

When I’m with my family.

What is your hidden talent?

When I’m not training or studying in college, I do play a bit of golf, so I’d say golf would be my hidden talent.

What might we be surprised to know about you?

That was my favourite subject in school was geography.

Anything else you’d like to share with us?

Just a big thanks to all the Cork City supporters for their continued support.
