Wrong way driver was missing elderly man

A dramatic incident involving a car driving at speed on the wrong side of a Cork city motorway has been linked with a missing person investigation, gardaí have confirmed.

Shocking footage of the incident emerged on Sunday showing a black car driving toward oncoming traffic on the South Ring Road near Douglas.

The 26 second video, which was captured from a car driving in the same direction on the correct side of the motorway, has been widely shared on social media.

The incident was reported to gardaí who, following enquiries, linked it with a missing person investigation involving an elderly male.

Gardaí said the elderly man was found is now receiving care.

A garda spokesperson said: “An incident of alleged dangerous driving where a car was observed driving on the wrong side of the road on the N40 South Ring Road in Cork city on Sunday 6 August was reported to An Garda Síochána.

“Following enquiries, this incident was linked with a missing person investigation involving an elderly male.

“Thankfully, this alleged dangerous driving incident did not lead to any further serious incidents and the elderly male was located and is currently receiving care.”
