Grey matter

A few simple guidelines will keep your silver tresses looking their best.

Grey hair can look fantastic but it’s not with its complications. Drier texture and susceptibility to yellowness can cause all kinds of problems for the grey-haired gal. Luckily, following a few simple guidelines and using our tried and tested products will keep your grey hair looking great.

Styling for grey hair

A common concern with grey hair is its potential to age you. While it might be tempting to skip the hairdresser when you're no longer dyeing your hair, that would be a mistake. Regular haircuts every 8 weeks will keep your grey hair sharply styled and looking its best.

Revitalise with clarifying shampoo

Grey hair tends to be drier, so using a moisturising shampoo and conditioner is key. Use gentle clarifying shampoos and avoid sulfates which are especially drying. We love L'Oréal Professionnel Metal Detox Shampoo (€25.95), it’s on the spendy side but it’s well worth it.

Neutralize those yellow tones

Aiming for white and bright hair? The absence of pigment in grey hair may lead to yellowing due to product build-up, mineral deposits from water, and heat styling. So, investing in purple shampoos or products to prevent brassiness is key. Bleach London has a great purple shampoo (€8.70) and conditioner that’s available in Boots. Another star product is Color WOW Dream Filter Pre-Shampoo Mineral Remover (€30.45). The pre-shampoo treatment filters out minerals like copper, typically found in hard water, that could make grey hair take on a yellow tinge.Marguerite Kiely
