10 events to try in Cork city this Culture Night

It’s nearly here! This year’s Culture Night is on Friday and over 150 live events are planned in Cork city alone.

From music to the arts, to comedy, fashion, and literature, Cork City’s Culture Night Programme contains a fantastic array of events taking place all around the city this Friday.

“Culture Night is a crucial part of our city’s event calendar and key part of the city’s sense of identity. With so many free events on offer, there is literally something for everyone. The big thing is to plan in advance what you want to see, view, and engage in. It is an evening to turn the TV off, come into town, relax and soak up the atmosphere. And I’ll see everyone there!” said Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Kieran McCarthy.

Here’s a look at 10 interesting options for Cork City’s Culture Night!

Catch a culture bus

Take a culture bus this Friday and be entertained on your journey. Bus Éireann will be running three bus routes for Culture Night with live performers on each bus from 6.30pm until 9.30pm.

Buses will leave every 30 minutes from Cork City Hall and take you on one of three routes around the city. Booking is not required so hop on the orange, pink or green route and be entertained as you take a trip around the city.

Up cycling workshop and wellness talk

Ebony Seed are holding an upcycling workshop and a wellness talk in the Victorian Quarter.

The upcycling workshop ‘up-cycle me’ will run from 6pm until 8pm and will introduce you to techniques that will enable you to upcycle your clothes. Attendees are asked to bring good vibes along with two fashion items, one to upcycle and the other to cut up.

Ebony Seed invites women to join them from 8.30pm until 10pm for a wellness talk to appreciate and celebrate the glory of being a woman. Both events are over 18s only and bookings can be made by emailing hello@ebonyseed.ie.

The Butter Museum

The Butter Museum will be holding an open night from 6pm until 8pm on Friday night.

Head to O’Connell square in Shandon and learn all about the history of butter production and sale in county Cork. This event is open to all ages.

Old cinemas of Cork walk

Calling all cinema fanatics! There will be an old cinemas of Cork walk starting at 7pm. The walk will last for one hour and show you the old cinemas across the city. The meeting point is at the Cork City Hall Plaza and bookings can be made at https://forms.office.com/e/hhr02UVA7g.

Rebel City Distillery open night

Rebel City Distillery will be hosting an open night but it’s for over 18s only and will run from 5pm until 7pm. Located in the historic docklands of Ballintemple, Rebel City Distillery is Cork city’s first distillery in over 50 years. Firkin Crane visual expedition and café tours

Dance Cork Firkin Crane will hold a Crane Visual exhibition Bardo Café for Culture Night.

From 4pm until 8pm, Dance Firkin Crane invites you to browse the artwork with curator Dermot Browne giving tours of Bardo Café. The event will have engagements from circular stories to climate poetry across an evening of sustainable living and culture. The event is open to all ages and booking is not required.

Polish folklore and wood workshop

Learn all about Polish folklore and take part in a wood workshop at the Polish Culture Centre and Library this Culture Night. The event will begin at 5pm until 8pm and is over 13s only. The Polish Culture Centre and Library is located at Green Gate Business Centre, Gould Street, The Lough.

Family science workshop

Old Cork Waterworks Experience present their ‘what’s in a drop’ family science workshop for Culture Night. Explore the properties of water and the lifeforms found within in this fun family event. The workshops start at 4.30pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm and are suitable for children aged 8-12 in a family group of no more than 6. The Old Cork Waterworks Experience is located at Sundays Well. Rogu Firestorm

Marina Market will present three of Ireland’s most skilled fire performers in a spectacular fire show for Culture Night. Firestorm is open to all ages and will begin at 9pm on Friday night.

Prepare yourself for epic showdowns, ridiculous fantasy, intense fire choreography and dreamlike worlds of illusion and imagination. Rogu Firestorm is part of Pitch’d Circus and Street Arts Festival. The cultural significance of trees

Explore and celebrate the cultural significance of trees this Culture Night. The Irish Tree Explored Network will be giving a tour of the UCC trees Friday night at the UCC arboretum. Meet at the Western Road gate entrance at 5pm.
