Specsavers are backing diversity

Two branches of Spcasavers in Cork are proud to have partnered with Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) to provide job opportunities for adults with Down Syndrome.

DSI’s National Employment Programme aims to break down barriers and encourage employers across Ireland to consider adults with Down Syndrome for roles. Meaningful employment has a significant positive impact on those with Down Syndrome. It improves confidence, increases social connectivity, and promotes independence and a sense of community.

Companies participating in the programme are provided with inclusive workplace training, which includes education and awareness of working with a person with Down Syndrome and diversity within the workplace.

Two of the many Specsavers stores involved in the programme are Specsavers Ballincollig and Wilton, where Alan Carroll, Aoife Lovett and Rebecca Pearson are part of the team. Alan, Aoife and Rebecca’s day-to-day roles include welcoming and guiding customers, front of house polishing of glasses and sorting lab orders.

Speaking on behalf of Specsavers Ballincollig and Wilton, store partner Deirdre Moore said: “We are delighted to have Alan, Aoife and Rebecca on our teams. Their positive energy is infectious, and they are invaluable members of the teams. We would encourage every business across Ireland to get involved with Down Syndrome Ireland’s National Employment Programme and experience the positive shift in the workforce as a result.”

Aoife Gaffney, Head of Employment at Down Syndrome Ireland added: “Down Syndrome Ireland are thankful to businesses like Specsavers for their commitment to our National Employment Programme. Seeing the joy that employment opportunities bring to Alan, Aoife and Rebecca is incredible and we hope that more businesses get involved in the future.”
