Carnage caused by Storm Agnes at Whitechurch GAA club.

Huge response to Storm Agnes plea

A GoFundMe page for a Cork GAA club ravaged by Storm Agnes has reached its goal for repair expenses in just two days.

In a great showing of community spirit, donations to Whitechurch GAA began to fly in immediately after a GoFundMe page was set up, exceeding its target of €5,000 in less than 48 hours.

The North Cork club’s grounds suffered devastating damage when Storm Agnes hit the south of Ireland last week, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The most significant damage was done to the ball stoppers at one end of one of the club’s pitches which were partially ripped down by high winds.

In a post on social media, the club said the damage was a significant extra expense that it had not budgeted for. “Storm Agnes definitely left her mark on our GAA club,” the club said.

“We urgently need to raise funds to remove and replace the ball stoppers and nets at the school end of pitch one. We are asking the community to help us raise €5,000 towards repairs.

“Every few bob would help and get the pitches back to use as soon as possible,” the club added.

An update posted after the target was reached added: “Míle buíochas gach éinne!!! Thank you so much to everyone who donated to our Storm Agnes recovery fund.

“What an amazing community (some of who were out in the rain on Saturday morning carrying out emergency works to make the pitch safe for a game on Sunday).”
