Name and position:Clodagh Tobin, Operations Manager, TELUS International Ireland

When you were small, what did you want to be as a grown-up?

A doctor or a teacher.

Tell us about your career progression to your role today:

I have a BA in Economics and German. When I applied for the job in TELUS International, I wanted to use my German, but it needed work before I was able to use it to a working proficiency. I was offered an English-speaking role with one of our clients in the hospitality industry. I worked part-time while I finished my degree and then applied for team manager when I returned full-time. I worked with various clients across the customer service and sales departments. I began working with a Fintech client in 2020, where I was promoted to group manager. While on maternity leave in 2022, I applied for my current role of operations manager. I am currently responsible for our sales and customer service teams, which keep a fast and invigorating pace.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?

My favourite part of my job is that I am continuously learning – every day is a new challenge, and it is an ever-changing environment. This really helps to keep me engaged in my job as it never goes stale.

What motivates you?

I am motivated by putting creative solutions in place to solve problems. My manager, Tadhg, is a great source of support for me. Any time I have an idea, he always lets me run with it, which I really appreciate.

What advice would you give your 15 year old self?

Everything works out for the best, don’t worry!

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

Probably something with animals - I’d love to learn dog grooming.

What is your greatest life or career achievement to-date?

My greatest life achievement has to be having my daughter, Cáit. She is the most incredible human being that brings so much joy to the whole family.

My greatest career achievement has been winning the Luminary award. I won the Meteor Award which is for emerging leaders who embrace diversity and inclusion. I really appreciated being recognised for my efforts in our Mental Health First Aid Team.

Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?

Without a doubt, my mam. She is the kindest, most generous, and compassionate person I’ve ever encountered. She is my biggest supporter and is everything I aspire to be.

What is the life dream now?

To live in a house full of puppies!

How do you switch off?

It varies from time to time but at the moment I enjoy crocheting and watching Netflix shows. I’m a big fan of TikTok, too.

What is your favourite Cork memory?

I visited Cape Clear a few years ago. The weather was stunning, and it was so peaceful.

What is your favourite place in Cork?

The Marina Market.

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

“The best is yet to come” - I love the thought that some of the best days of our lives haven’t happened yet.

When are you at your happiest?

The best part of my day is having some silly time with my daughter before her bedtime. Her laugh brings me endless happiness.

What is your hidden talent?

It’s yet to be uncovered.

What might we be surprised to know about you?

I have a very short attention span and get easily distracted or bored. That’s why I never manage to keep a hobby for long.
