The people of Mahon this week were boosted after the area’s first community garden was established in Ringmahon House.

Over 90 volunteers from Telus International Ireland, along with volunteers from Green Spaces for Health and other community groups established the garden on Monday.

The volunteers took on tasks such as installing raised beds, creating vegetable drills, planting fruit trees and other plants, painting gates and walls, installing a small pond to help with biodiversity, and assembling and painting picnic benches to help set up the new community garden which is now open to the public.

The event was part of a Telus Days of Giving volunteer event. These events bring together team members and retirees along with their families and friends with the aim of making a positive impact in their local communities.

Since 2007, the Telus International team members have impacted the lives of more than 1.2 million people across the globe through volunteer activities and charitable giving.

Speaking about the event, Roger Clancy at Telus said: “Our volunteers today are giving back to our local community in Mahon by working to enhance this amenity, with the help of some Youth Reach participants, Transition Year students from Nagle Community School and members of Mahon Tidy Towns.

“It is fantastic to see our team members in action as part of this year’s Telus Days of Giving event. Helping the community is central to our culture at Telus International and making a meaningful impact is a priority for our team members.”

This is the second project where Telus International Ireland has partnered with Green Spaces for Health.

In 2021, Telus International team members successfully built an organic community garden in Bishopstown. The half-acre empty space in Murphy’s Farm was transformed by the volunteers to include raised beds to grow fruit and vegetables, a new picnic area, bee hotels and freshly planted wildflowers. Mr Clancy added: “Volunteer days are an integral part of Telus International Ireland’s award-winning CSR programme.”
