Cathal McCarthy has been awarded 96FM/CO13’s GAA Sport’s Star award for the month of October.

The Sarsfields Hurling Club star proved to be a key player throughout the campaign and at the business end of the season.

He now joins the previous monthly winners in the competition for the overall award which will be announced at a gala banquet on 26 January, for the 20th year of the awards.

Despite a difficult season, Sarsfields triumphed on the field by winning the County Senior Hurling title for the first time in 10 years, beating their East Cork neighbours Midleton in the final.

McCarthy said: “It’s been a good few weeks for the club, despite everything that has happened, and we were delighted to win the county.” The corner-back paid thanks to his family, coach, and team members: “My family have been hugely supportive and John (Crowley) the coach was outstanding, and I would not be here of course without my teammates who worked very hard all year.”

County Board Chairman Marc Sheehan congratulated Cathal: “It’s been a difficult few months for the club, but the resilience displayed by the team was a reflection on the standards that the club sets. I congratulate Cathal and all in the club on a wonderful achievement and I know ye will overcome the devastation that the flood damage caused and be as strong as ever going forward.”

Tom Tobin at the Rochestown Park Hotel and Kieran Mc Geary at 96FM also congratulated Cathal and wished Sarsfields the very best in the coming months on and off the field.

Family members were in attendance while the club was represented by Coach John Crowley, Chairman Keith Mulcahy, President Denis Hurley.

Vice-President Neil Hurley was also present along with County Board PRO Francis Kenneally.

The competition for the overall sport star award includes the monthly winners of 96FM/CO13’s GAA Sport’s Star award.

Cathal McCarthy will go up against Shane Beston, Ballygiblin; Dylan Foley UCC; Willie Duggan, Mitchelstown; Eoin Downey, Cork Under 21 Hurling; Doireann O’Sullivan, Cork Ladies football; Michael Mullins, Cork Under 21 Captain; Rory Maguire, Cork football; Amy O’Connor, Cork Camogie Captain; and Tadgh Twomey, Newcestown.

There will be two other awards presented on the night – the Kieran O’Driscoll Youth Award, and the Donal Lehane Distinguished Career Award.
