Ironman will not go ahead in 2024

In a statement released earlier this week, the organisers of Ironman have confirmed that the competition would be taking a hiatus from Youghal in 2024 following the deaths of two competitors in August during the 2023 event.

“Cork County and the town of Youghal have become a much-loved home for Ironman in Ireland, and the Irish triathlon community is important to us,” the group said.

“This pause will allow for further healing while we spend the next year assessing the best path forward to deliver an exceptional weekend of racing once again for our athletes in one of the most passionate host communities in the world.

“We are thankful for the support of Cork County Council, and we appreciate their continued partnership and commitment.”

The news will come as a blow to the town, as it is estimated that the event brings in an estimated €12 million to the local economy.

However the race is set to return in 2025, with the organisers saying they intend on bringing Ironman back “in the strongest way possible”.

In a statement, a spokesperson from Cork County Council noted the decision by Ironman to take a hiatus in 2024. “This decision was solely a decision for Ironman,” they said. “Cork County and the town of Youghal have become a much-loved home for Ironman in Ireland, and the Irish triathlon community.

"The council remains committed to continuing its relationship with Ironman. In recognition of the significant tourism and economic importance that the event has to the region,“ they added.

Cork County Council has agreed to host the event again in 2025, 2026 and 2027.

The competition became embroiled in controversy following the tragic deaths of two men, with conflicting narratives emerging about the reasons the event was allowed to proceed.
