Cork County Council has won a prestigious award for its Cobh Town Centre Urban Design Plan.

The Public Space Planning Award 2023 was given to the local authority in recognition of its exemplary work in the heart of Cobh town centre. The design plan was recognised for its innovative, people-centered design which prioritises accessibility and inclusiveness.

Cork County Council received the award at the KPMG Property Industry Excellence Awards 2023. The judges were particularly impressed by the council's emphasis on engaging the community throughout the 20 month design process.

Mayor of Cork County, Cllr Frank O’Flynn, expressed his gratitude for the recognition and the award. “This accolade is a testament to our commitment to creating vibrant, inclusive public spaces that enhance the lives of those living, working, and visiting Cobh.”

Valerie O’Sullivan, Chief Executive of Cork County Council, added: “Our approach to urban design is rooted in collaboration and engagement with the community. The 20 month community engagement process allowed us to gain valuable insights and perspectives, ensuring the Cobh Town Centre Urban Design Plan truly reflects the needs and aspirations of the people it serves.”

Cork City Council also bagged an accolade recently, winning the Urban Revival award at the 2023 Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards.

The award was given in recognition of the council’s innovative, multi-million euro Springville House ‘rightsizing’ scheme which saw a once-derelict office block in Blackrock converted into social housing for older people.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD said: “What we see through these awards is something I regularly get to witness on my travels across the country, the hard work and dedication of our local authorities. Time and again local authorities display immense agility in responding to the challenges which they are presented with.

“While the award ceremony offers us a chance to acknowledge and celebrate the work undertaken by our local authorities, I would like to reiterate the Government’s appreciation of our local authorities all year round,” he added.
