Treacherous conditions lead to numerous collisions

Cork road users faced treacherous conditions this morning with numerous incidents reported due to icy conditions.

Met Eireann issued a status yellow ice and fog warning which was in place until 10am this morning.

Cork County Council treated all Priority 1 and 2 routes overnight including the N20, N22, and N71 and urged road users to “to exercise extreme caution if travelling”.

Blarney village was closed earlier this morning due to a number of incidents due to black ice, along with Blackstone Bridge and the Kerry Pike to Healy’s Bridge area.

There were reports of multiple collisions throughout the morning, including  Lower Killeens, the Forest Road area of Carrigaline, Farranferris Avenue, Carrigeeny and Rockboro Road.

Unsalted footpaths around Kent station were slippery underfoot and were described as “lethal” by pedestrians, along with platforms in Rushbrooke and Glounthaune which were also reported as having black ice.

Cork City Council issued a warning earlier this morning, urging caution.

“Please be cautious this morning when travelling across the city as the roads and footpaths may still be slippery. Our crews have been working across the city gritting roads and footpaths,” it said.

Meanwhile, Met Éireann have issued a future status yellow low temperature and  ice warning for Cork, which is valid from 9pm tonight until 10am tomorrow, with forecasters warning that it will be cold with icy conditions.
